Jonathan MacFarlane

MA, LPC, NCC

I’m probably not what you imagine when you think “shrink.” I won’t be wearing a suit and I'm not even going to ask you to lay on the couch (but you absolutely can if you want to). I’ll probably crack a joke or two. We're going to get work done, but it won’t be as awkward as you might expect from TV.

I am an existential therapist, which means I believe peace can be found by finding meaning in our lives: "If we have our own why in life, we shall get along with almost any how." A main focus of my approach is helping clients understand themselves—their values, goals, and motivations—and using that understanding to work on the presenting problems. However, some things are better addressed with other forms of therapy, and I’ll use these as well. I’m comfortable integrating any spiritual, religious, or philosophical beliefs important to you into the process.

I am a fully-licensed professional counselor (LPC) in Georgia and a nationally certified counselor (NCC); I am Prepare/Enrich certified, and currently pursuing certification in Gottman Method couple’s counseling. I have earned a BS in psychology from Georgia Gwinnett College; an MA in clinical mental health counseling from Richmont Graduate University; and am completing a PhD in counselor supervision and education at Walden University, with a specific focus on the treatment of religious and spiritual abuse.

My dog is with me in-office most days. He is extremely friendly and open to being held, petted, given treats, etc. Demands it, even. If you aren’t comfortable with dogs, or if he gets to be too much, just let me know and he will spend the session in his “house” (a very comfortable crate).

I’ve been a resident of metro-Atlanta since 1996, and live in Lawrenceville with my wife and dog. I enjoy cooking, woodworking, and playing with guitars. I also know more random trivia than any one person reasonably should.

Jacques is my giant French bulldog puppy and therapy dog-in-training. He loves attention the most.

Rylo

Rylo was my previous puppy; sadly he passed away in November 2023, leaving behind legions of adoring fans.
